June 1, 2006. Consul General Duane C. Butcher visited the first Hamburg street soccer world cup with young players from 32 nations to support the American team from Hamburg’s International School. On June 6, Consul General Butcher and the Public Affairs section welcomed 80 children and high school students (age 5 to 16) from Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg for a U.S. soccer day. The young players competed or will compete in mini world cups, representing the U.S. team, or took part in the street soccer world cup. In the morning, the children attended the open practice of the U.S. Men’s National Team. The group then visited the U.S. Consulate for a soccer reception with CG Duane Butcher. On June 7, Hamburg’s Mayor Ole von Beust welcomed the U.S. Men’s National Team and U.S. team manager Bruce Arena to Hamburg’s magnificent Town Hall where Bruce Arena presented Mayor von Beust with a personalized U.S. jersey. Both Bruce Arena and CG Butcher thanked the Mayor and the City of Hamburg for their hospitality and enthusiastic welcome. More than 100 invited guests, including German soccer legend Uwe Seeler, attended the reception and a crowd of more than 400 fans in front of the Town Hall cheered for the team. |
