Representatives of Immigrant Organizations Meet with Ambassador Timken and Wife Sue November 1-3, 2006. As part of a November visit to the Hamburg consular district, Ambassador and Mrs. William R Timken, Jr. engaged with numerous representatives of Muslim and immigrant organizations to learn more about integration efforts in northern Germany. Mrs. Timken visited the Ulu Camii Mosque on November 1 in Kiel where she met with members of the Turkish community in that city.(more)
Ambassador Timken Announces State Department Grant For Integration Project November 3, 2006. Ambassador William R. Timken, Jr. announced the award of a major State Department grant of $ 250,000 for a joint project conducted by CDS International, Inc. in New York and the Körber Foundation in Hamburg. The grant will fund a two-year project examining and comparing means of integrating immigrant and minority populations in Germany and the U.S., with the objective of establishing positive relations between U.S. and German ethnic minorities.(more)
Youth Exchange Roadshow in Mecklenburg-Pomerania October 16-19, 2006. The Public Affairs section teamed up with “America @ your library” partners in four cities in Mecklenburg-Pomerania to carry out a series of youth exchange fairs. More than 350 high school and university students, parents, teachers and young professionals in Wismar, Neubrandenburg, Greifswald and Stralsund had the opportunity to meet with representatives and returnees from exchange organizations, including AFS, AIFS, AYUSA, Experiment, Partnership International and YFU.(more)
U.S. Day in Bremen October 10, 2006. PA Hamburg and the Bremen U.S. Center organized the 3rd U.S. Day in Bremen, attracting a crowd of more than 550 Bremen residents, including around 300 high school students to Bremen’s World Trade Center. Visitors learned about student exchange and opportunities for study in the U.S., received answers to their visa and American Citizen Services questions by a consular official, discovered new aspects about America from IRC specialists, and listened to a lecture on the U.S. economy and U.S. economic policies by the Consulate Political and Economic Officer.(more)
U.S. Consulate Day in Kiel August 31, 2006. Working in close cooperation with the Kennedy Infocenter, a German-American Institute, Consulate General Hamburg hit the road and spent the day in the northern port city of Kiel providing public affairs outreach and consular services. Hamburg Consul General Duane C. Butcher addressed 70 students and teachers answering a wide-range of questions on U.S. foreign and domestic policies.(more)
Celebrating 30 Years of the Norfolk and Wilhelmshaven Sister Cities Partnership August 4, 2006. Management Officer Robin Blunt and the Public Affairs section of the U.S. Consulate General in Hamburg hosted a reception for 27 high school students from the sister cities of Norfolk, Virginia and Wilhelmshaven, Lower Saxony. The two cities are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their partnership and the delegation visited the Consulate to learn about Mission Germany’s activities. They also received information on study and work abroad programs in the U.S. and Germany.(more)

First Lady Laura Bush inaugurated an America@yourlibrary partnership at the Children’s Library in Stralsund. Mrs. Bush talked about the benefits of reading and how “reading and being able to learn and discuss ideas freely is a basic requirement for a healthy democratic society.” She also announced plans to host a White House Conference on Global Literacy during the UN General Assembly this fall in order to assist in increasing literacy in the world’s developing countries.(more)
Ambassador Timken Visits Bremen and Tarmstedt July 6-7, 2006. Ambassador William Robert Timken, Jr., met local officials and businessmen, visited cultural institutions, spoke to large audiences, and addressed journalists’ questions in Bremen and Tarmstedt, delivering a strong message of German-American friendship. Ambassador and Mrs. Timken’s trip to Bremerhaven’s new German Emigration Center museum and on to the region of Lower Saxony where the Ambassador’s ancestors lived was a human-interest story of discovery, and a celebration of the strong and enduring ties between the German and American peoples.(more)
America@YourLibrary Project Inaugurated in Wismar June 19, 2006. Consul General Duane C. Butcher, Wismar Senator for Education and Culture and Youth and Sports Thomas Beyer, and the Wismar City Library inaugurated an America@yourlibrary partnership. 2006 World Cup and U.S. Soccer Activities in Hamburg June 1, 2006. Consul General Duane C. Butcher visited the first Hamburg street soccer world cup with young players from 32 nations to support the American team from Hamburg’s International School. On June 6, Consul General Butcher and the Public Affairs section welcomed 80 children and high school students (age 5 to 16) from Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg for a U.S. soccer day.(more)
Hamburg Consul General Strengthens U.S. Ties to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern May 3/4, 2006. Consul General Duane C. Butcher visited Uecker-Randow County. During his two-day visit that included a discussion with 350 students of a German-Polish high school, a meeting with local politicians, a visit to a steel mill, the friends of the environment of Uecker-Randow region, and a German military base, Butcher encouraged student exchange, informed about the depth of US-German political and economic relations, and appreciated the German contribution in Afghanistan.(more)
Open House at Hamburg U.S. Consulate General May 4, 2006. The Consulate had an open house for the American community and German-American organizations in Hamburg. Heads of the Consular-, Political/Economic - and Public Affairs section as well as the Commercial Service, introduced the audience to principal activities e.g. the school outreach program and Mission Germany’s educational and informational resources and services. International Visitor Leadership Program Grantee Accolades American Library System April 24, 2006. Uta Trampe, deputy director of the City Library in Wismar in Mecklenburg-Pomerania, presented “Impressions from U.S. Libraries” to an audience of 65, including librarians, members of the “Förderverein für die Stadtbibliothek” (Friends of the Library Association) as well as the city manager and the general public. She singled out U.S. libraries for their exemplary library services, customer orientation, and programs for minorities and children. Ms. Trampe enhanced her presentation by impressive photographs taken while visiting the Unites States with the International Visitor Leadership Program America@YourLibrary that took place from March 6 to 24.(more)
The Last Three Feet - State Alumni Reception in Hamburg March 31, 2006. Consul General Duane Butcher and PA Hamburg hosted a reception for 139 North German alumni of the International Visitor Leadership Program, the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange Program and the Fulbright Program. Consul General Butcher highlighted the importance of personal contacts to promote mutual understanding and the invaluable transatlantic network of alumni that U.S.-government supported programs have helped to establish. The reception proved to be a great networking opportunity for the alumni, who very much welcomed the opportunity to join the global state alumni community.(more)
Strategic Growth Program Signed in Ballroom March 10, 2006. Consul General Butcher welcomed a 20-member delegation, led by Landraetin Kathrin Knuth, from the Landkreis Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The delegation included members of all four political parties represented in the Landkreis government (CDU, SPD, PDS, FDP), as well as business and farming representatives. The visit to the Consulate was originally conceived during former U.S. Ambassador Dan Coats' trip to Neustrelitz in 2005, and served to expand on the already active cooperation between Mecklenburg-Strelitz and the Consulate.(more)
Gymnasium Students in Wismar Learned about Native-American Literature March 6, 2006. Debra Magpie Earling read from her highly acclaimed and award-winning debut novel Perma Red to 130 11th and 12th grade students and their teachers at the city library in Wismar in Mecklenburg-Pommerania. Earling discussed her work and shared her insights about life on the Flathead reservation, and the beliefs of her people. Questioning and discussion continued far after the time allotted. Yildirim Visits Consul General Butcher February 21, 2006. Cafer Yildirim, Secretary General of the Kurdish Platform, visited Consul General Butcher to describe his recent trip to northern Iraq. The Kurdish Platform is the umbrella organization representing Hamburg's 30,000 Kurdish residents. The Consulate has in the past organized a series of outreach events with the Platform, including an evening program focused on study and work opportunities in the United States. (more)
Hamburg Consulate Inaugurates "Understanding USA" Lecture Series January 31, 2006. Consul General Duane Butcher spoke at Hamburg University before 70 students on “German-American Relations Today and Tomorrow.” Butcher was the first of six U.S.-knowledgeable speakers, who will cover patriotism and the constitution, the U.S. as world policeman, the American Dream, volunteerism, and the right to bear arms. The series has been organized by the Friedrich Naumann foundation for political education, with support from the Public Affairs section of the American Consulate in Hamburg. Consul General Duane Butcher talked about the success of the German-American partnership and the common values and interests that unite the U.S. and Germany today and in the future.(more)
The African-American Experience Illuminated for Educators and Students January 31, 2006. IRC arranged two programs for U.S. Speaker Ethel Morgan Smith, University of West Virginia, in Hamburg. She gave a reading from her work at Gymnasium Heidberg and a presentation at the teacher training institute. She engaged her audiences in lively Q&A sessions and answered a wide range of questions about her personal life as well as the current state of the civil rights movement. Educators received authentic insights into African-American life and were exposed to new books and films suitable to teaching the topic in the secondary English language classroom.(more)
