July 13, 2006. First Lady Laura Bush inaugurated an America@yourlibrary partnership at the Children’s Library in Stralsund. Mrs. Bush talked about the benefits of reading and how “reading and being able to learn and discuss ideas freely is a basic requirement for a healthy democratic society.” She also announced plans to host a White House Conference on Global Literacy during the UN General Assembly this fall in order to assist in increasing literacy in the world’s developing countries. High school students from the Goethe and Hansa Gymnasiums in Stralsund attended the opening ceremony and had the opportunity to ask the First Lady questions about being married to the President, her projects supporting children, her favorite books, and the World Cup. |
